Put your hands
on the tape

Record through your iPhone, iPad, or a compatible USB audio device. Touch the tape to scratch, slow, stop, and reverse it—then keep every take, version, stem, and bounce together.

TapeMan Recorder · Cassette Recorder & FX

The TapeMan cassette: a pink shell with a cream label reading TAPEMAN, twin reels, and a TM tape window.

Core workflow

One screen. The whole session.

The cassette and the take library stay together in the main view, so recording, auditioning, and organising never send you to another screen.

Capture

  • Record from the built-in microphone
  • Record from class-compliant USB audio devices
  • Choose input and output channel pairs
  • Monitor live audio while you play

Organise

  • Signal-activated recording
  • Record WAV or M4A
  • Search, sort, filter, and loop takes
  • Rename, trim, share, and delete in place
Tape interaction

Touch the tape

Scratch it. Slow it down. Stop it. Reverse it. TapeMan makes the recording surface part of the performance.

Transport behaviour

Choose how the tape responds to your hand with Hold, Follow, Sync, and Mix modes, plus tape start and stop shaping.

Wear and wobble

Dial in tape wear, wobble, and recording color so takes sit somewhere between clean and gloriously worn out.

Live manipulation

Manipulate the tape while recording input, monitoring, or playing back a saved take—no separate edit mode.

Effects

Perform the effects

Play effects like an instrument, then bounce the performance into a new version without replacing the original.

Color

Tone, saturation, and character effects that colour the signal as it passes through the tape path.

Motion

Time-based movement—stutter, warp, and modulation—triggered from stackable performance controls.

Space

Room, plate, and echo treatments that place the tape in a space, from tight ambience to long trails.

Bounce

Bounce recording captures the performance non-destructively as a new version alongside the original take.

New in 1.1

Beat-synced live tape

Capture the tape in time. Loops lock to the grid, so a phrase you play by hand comes back exactly where it should.

Loop lengths

  • Half-bar to eight-bar live loops
  • Quantized capture and release
  • ½×, 1×, and 2× tape speed

Tempo sources

  • MIDI clock
  • Detected audio beats
  • Tap tempo and manual entry

Capture point

  • PRE FX capture keeps the dry source
  • POST FX capture keeps the performance
  • Loops land beside the take they came from
Punch It FX

Punch it, in the app or in your host

Punch It FX is TapeMan's performance effects engine. Use it inside the recorder, or load it as an AUv3 Music Effect in an iPhone or iPad host.

Effect families and modes

  • Color, Motion, and Space effect families
  • Raw and Direct modes for immediate control
  • XY performance pad with selectable XY mappings
  • Stackable controls you can play in real time

Recorder vs. plug-in

  • In the recorder: punch the tape, then bounce a new version
  • As an AUv3 Music Effect: process any track in a host on iPhone and iPad
  • MIDI triggering, with host tempo support where the host provides it
  • The AUv3 plug-in is an iPhone and iPad feature
Monitoring and devices

Live USB monitoring

Plug in a class-compliant interface and hear yourself while the tape rolls—on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Routing

  • Selectable input and output channel pairs
  • A separate USB return for monitoring
  • Compatible speaker fallback if the interface drops out

Every screen size

  • iPhone, iPad, and Mac layouts
  • Larger tape surface on wide screens
  • Keyboard and pointer control on Mac

Safe monitoring

Use headphones while monitoring to avoid feedback, and let signal-activated recording start the tape when sound arrives.

Takes

Every take stays together

Versions and stems

  • Originals and processed versions grouped together
  • Stems and bounces stored beside their source
  • Notes and tempo metadata on every take

Find it fast

  • Search, sort, and filter the library
  • Everything stored locally on the device
  • Sharing is always a deliberate action
Optional stems

Separate locally

Install the optional stem model when you need it. Separate vocals, drums, bass, and other on your device, then mute, solo, mix, share, or save the result.

How the model works
  • The optional model is downloaded only after you confirm it.
  • The archive is verified against a pinned checksum before use.
  • Your audio is never uploaded for processing.
  • Separation runs locally, and the model can be removed again.
Video environments and themes

Make it your tape

Import your own local videos as silent looping cassette backgrounds, apply a pixel treatment, and choose from ten 90s-inspired themes in light or dark mode.

  • Night Drive

  • Pool Hall

  • Sunfade

  • Chrome

  • Blueberry

  • Acid

  • Vapor

  • Walkman

  • Game Boy

  • Cherry Cola

Stays on device

Recordings, versions, stems, notes, and imported video environments remain on the device unless you export or share them.

Honest about the network

Optional purchases use Apple's StoreKit, and the optional stem model is downloaded from a public GitHub release when you ask for it.
